Teen Teeth: Adolescent Oral Health

 adolescent dental issues

If you are a teenager or the parent of a teenager, today’s Your Time Dental Urgent Care post is for you. Today’s post discusses dental issues of special concern to adolescents. Dental risks for Gibsonton teens include both developmental and lifestyle-related factors.

At Your Time Dental Urgent Care, we see cavities and gum disease far too often in teens. Possible causes and complicating circumstances include insufficient dental hygiene, unhealthy diet, malocclusion (misaligned bite), smoking, hormonal changes, tooth grinding, mouth breathing, eating disorders, and side effects of medications.

As children become more independent, some get lax about brushing and flossing. Additionally, some teens’ diets become worse when they have more freedom to choose what to eat. Few parents let their four year-old drink an energy drink, but they are consumed frequently by Gibsonton adolescents – presumably without their parents’ knowledge.

Malocclusion can make proper brushing and flossing problematic, leaving even vigilant brushers with decay from food particles that are almost impossible to remove. Malocclusion can also trigger TMD (Temporomandibular disorder). If you suspect that your teen’s bite is not aligned properly, or if your teen observes a clicking sound in the jaw joint, call Your Time Dental Urgent Care at 813-519-0128 to schedule an exam.

In spite of numerous Florida public service campaigns aimed at preventing teen smoking, many youth take up the detrimental habit even before they graduate from high school. Smoking wrecks teeth as surely as it wrecks lungs.

Gibsonton parents of teenagers are well aware that puberty has a significant impact on physical and emotional health. Puberty causes all sorts of changes in the body, and the mouth is no exception. Increased hormone levels (especially in females) can cause the body to react to a very small amount of plaque, triggering inflammation of gum tissue and increased risk of the more advanced form of gum disease known as periodontitis. Your dentist can guide you if more frequent professional cleanings are necessary to preserve gum health.

If you visit any soccer field or basketball court in Florida, you will see that many young athletes fail to protect their teeth. If your adolescent participates in a contact sport, talk to us about custom athletic mouthguards.

One of the teen dental issues that impact most young men and women is wisdom teeth. It’s best to start monitoring your teen’s wisdom teeth early so they can be treated before they result in dilemmas with the jaw or surrounding teeth. And you certainly don’t want to send your high-school grad to an out-of-state college without addressing his or her third molars. If problems emerge, your youth won’t be near their regular dentist, will probably miss class, and will either need to come home or use an out-of-network dentist or oral surgeon. If you don’t have a family dentist, Richard Kernagis of Your Time Dental Urgent Care can examine your teen and evaluate X-rays to advise you on the best course of action for his or her wisdom teeth.

This article is by no means exhaustive on the vital subject of adolescent oral health. Future posts will discuss orthodontia, oral piercings, eating disorders, and abnormal teeth growth.

Relax. Your Teeth Will Thank You.

Lithia cosmetic dental and tooth implants

Most men and women have been warned about the physical effects of stress. Our doctors remind us to protect ourselves from the dangers of unmanaged stress by eating healthy, exercising regularly, and getting adequate sleep.

We know that we shouldn’t try to relieve stress with overeating, unhealthy alcohol consumption, smoking, or uncontrolled spending. (Even though many of us are guilty!)

Stress that is not properly managed can affect the heart, nervous system, immune system, and digestive system. It can also affect—you guessed it—your teeth.

The obvious oral health hazards are teeth grinding, jaw clenching, smoking, and the overconsumption of sugary foods. But did you know that stress can also exacerbate plaque production, trigger canker sores and increase the risk of periodontitis? Another problem is that when individuals are under excessive stress, they often neglect basic oral hygiene.

If you’re concerned about the effects stress can have on your teeth, schedule an appointment with Richard Kernagis at Your Time Dental Urgent Care today. We offer a broad scope of preventative, restorative, and cosmetic dental services including weekend dental care, sedation dentistry, root canals, and dental implants.

It’s ironic, but for some Gibsonton residents, dental visits cause major anxiety. What if the thought of visiting a dentist sends your blood pressure through the roof? Talk to us about sedation dentistry.

Relax. We can help you get the dental treatment you need.

Are Your Teeth black?

Are Your Teeth red?

…probably not. But tooth color is probably something you have been concerned about.

One of our primary concerns at Your Time Dental Urgent Care is ensuring that our patients maintain healthy teeth and gums. But beyond just the health aspect, I also strive to help our patients achieve beautiful smiles that they can be proud of.

One important aspect of this is the color of your teeth.

To start, it’s important to understand that tooth color can vary from person to person. While you certainly don’t have pure yellow teeth, you do have a color that is in a known range. Some people naturally have whiter teeth, while others may have teeth that are more yellow or grayish in color.

Additionally, factors such as age, genetics, and lifestyle habits (such as smoking or consuming dark-colored beverages like coffee or red wine) can also affect the color of a person’s teeth.

As a dentist, I’m trained to evaluate the color of my patients’ teeth and recommend appropriate treatments to help improve their appearance. For example, one common treatment option is teeth whitening. This involves using a special bleaching agent to lighten the color of the teeth, making them appear whiter and brighter.

However, it’s important to note that not all teeth are suitable candidates for whitening. For example, teeth that are severely discolored or have undergone certain dental procedures (such as root canals) may not respond well to whitening treatments. In these cases, alternative treatment options may need to be considered, such as dental veneers or crowns.

Another important consideration when it comes to tooth color is maintaining good oral hygiene habits. Regular brushing and flossing can help remove surface stains and prevent new ones from forming. Additionally, visiting the dentist regularly for professional cleanings and checkups can help identify and address any underlying dental issues that may be contributing to discoloration.

Overall, we believe that helping patients achieve healthy, beautiful smiles is a crucial part of our job here at Your Time Dental Urgent Care. While tooth color is just one aspect of this, it’s an important one that can have a significant impact on your overall confidence and self-esteem.

Cosmetic Dental Artistry

Gibsonton Cosmetic Dental Artistry Gibsonton cosmetic dentistry is part science and part art.

I’m Richard Kernagis of Your Time Dental Urgent Care and enjoy using my extensive dental training and artistic skills to design treatment plans unique to each of my Gibsonton cosmetic dental patients.

In order to achieve an attractive, yet natural-looking result, I do much more than recommend specific procedures. I consider the shape, alignment, color and condition of the teeth. In order to create a balanced look, the facial shape and coloring is taken into account. The Tampa dentistry patient’s age, health condition and lifestyle all influence the plan.

At Your Time Dental Urgent Care, there is no one-size-fits-all treatment plan.

My artistic abilities have been perfected over several years of creating smile transformations for my Apollo Beach and Fish Hawk cosmetic dentistry patients. Even fairly recent cosmetic dental procedures such as teeth whitening and porcelain veneers have advanced considerably. Dental implants are a truly remarkable solution for our Florida dental patients who have lost one or more teeth.

I would love to perform a personalized smile makeover for you. When the work has been completed and you are enjoying your new look, it will only be obvious to those who see you all the time. Others will assume you have always been blessed with a naturally beautiful and healthy smile.

Bridging The Gap

cosmetic dental Gibsonton

Hello Gibsonton smiles! Do you have a missing tooth that is detracting from your otherwise attractive teeth? Let Your Time Dental Urgent Care fill the gap for you and help you get your sensational smile back! A dental bridge could be the perfect answer for your missing tooth and help you chew and speak properly.

A bridge incorporates two or more crowns on either side of the gap created by your missing tooth. These two anchoring teeth allow a false tooth to be held in place where the missing tooth should be. The false tooth that is placed in the gap is called a pontic. Bridges can contain one or more pontics. A pontic can be matched to the surrounding teeth if you choose a porcelain material. If you’d like, a pontic can also be fabricated using gold or an alloy.

Dr. Kernagis will work closely with you to make certain that your bridge has an exact fit. Then one of our skilled hygienists will show you how to clean under and around the bridge to ensure that no decay occurs in the nooks and crannies.

Dr. Kernagis has been successfully restoring smiles since 2001. Thousands of patients have trusted Your Time Dental Urgent Care with their dental health.

Come see us at Your Time Dental Urgent Care and you can bridge the gap and love your smile again!

Is Your Low-Carb Diet Giving You Dragon Breath?

bad breath treatment Tampa

Many individuals mistakenly believe that all bad breath is linked to poor brushing. The truth is that there are myriad causes of halitosis. Your dentist can help you discover the cause of your problem and discuss how to cure bad breath.

Your diet considerably influences your breath. Because foods begin to be digested the second they enter your mouth, and because they are absorbed and distributed throughout the body, you probably will be able to smell strong-smelling foods like onions and garlic long after you’ve eaten them.

Therefore, using mouthwash will only mask the smell. Constantly sucking on breath mints is also not a smart move. This may bring additional oral problems—especially if the mints have sugar. If you want real relief, you may need to avoid strong foods altogether.

Moreover, many dieters find that their diet regimen is making it harder to keep their mouths fresh and clean. Low-carb and no-carb diets promote fat burning, but the side effect of bad breath can be caused by the chemicals released during this process. Increasing water intake can help alleviate this.

Lastly, flossing regularly is often the key to truly fresh breath. Many people don’t realize how much food can be stuck between their teeth, and this food can cause halitosis if it isn’t removed. More importantly, the food particles turn into plaque which can cause cavities and gum disease.

I’m Dr. Richard Kernagis of
Your Time Dental Urgent Care in Gibsonton. My practice provides general, restorative, and cosmetic dentistry to residents in the Tampa area. I am passionate about prime oral health for all of my patients, and that includes fresh breath. I also want them to love their smile, so if you have any questions about smile redesigns or other cosmetic dental services, give us a call at 813-519-0128.

3-Point Checklist Before Your Dental Consultation

family dentist Gibsonton

Looking for a dentist because you’re losing the battle with plaque build-up, chipped teeth, tooth pain, stains, or decay? I’m Dr. Richard Kernagis with Your Time Dental Urgent Care.

Today’s post offers 3 steps to take before you arrive at our office for a consultation.

The state of your mouth is vital to your well-being both emotionally and physically. Everyone wants to make a winning impression when they smile or speak. We understand that.

The look, the odor, the feel, and the functionality of your biting surfaces are so important to your everyday experience that we recognize our vital role in finding solutions to these issues.

Of course, your very first step is making contact. Please call 813-519-0128 or visit us at 13145 Kings Lake Drive Ste 105B Gibsonton or online .

After you schedule a consultation with our team, please take a moment to review the following checklist for a productive appointment experience:

1. Analyze your hygiene routine and gaps in technique or consistency.

When do you brush your teeth? Do you floss? How often? If not, why? We can discuss your habits and identify what is holding you back if anything.

2. Describe pain or problem areas throughout your mouth.

Persistent or intermittent? Sharp or dull? Triggered by hot or cold? Living with pain is unneeded with the technology and expertise available these days. Usually, there are easy solutions to seemingly big pains. Let us address all your aches.

3. Explain what you want your smile to look like.

If you can describe your optimal smile, we can explore how to obtain it. There are numerous possibilities for an exceptional smile makeover as well as dental maintenance services. Cosmetic dentistry runs the gamut from teeth whitening to veneers to dental implants.

We welcome questions about the cost of porcelain veneers, the price of filling a cavity, or placing a crown. We have answers for you. We are equipped and trained in care perfect for your needs. We see patients for root canals, tooth extractions, and weekend dental care, to name a few.

When it comes to looking for a dentist in Gibsonton or the surrounding communities, please know that you will be in gentle and capable hands with me, Dr. Kernagis, and my comfortable team.

Avoid Bone Deterioration Following Extraction

Gibsonton Jaw Bone Deterioration Hello, friends of Your Time Dental Urgent Care! In today’s post, we will address jaw bone health.

Those tooth roots are important!

To remain healthy and dense, your jawbone needs to be constantly stimulated by the pressure of chewing, biting, and talking. Each tooth has a root structure that extends into the surrounding bone material. As each tooth absorbs the forces of everyday mouth function, it stimulates blood flow in the bone surrounding the root.

Have you had a tooth extracted?

In some cases, tooth extraction is the only possible procedure for men and women with tooth damage beyond repair. However, we make every effort to retain the root structure. When a tooth is extracted, the jaw bone that surrounded the previous root structure begins to recede.

A dental implant replaces both the root and the crown of an extracted tooth

Fortunately, tooth implants provide a new, artificial root which helps to keep the surrounding bone healthy and strong. A dental implant is comprised of a substantial titanium post which replaces the natural root and eventually integrates into the surrounding bone.

After the implant has been placed and the surrounding bone has healed and integrated with the implant, a post is placed into the implant. The new artificial tooth, or crown, is then attached to the post. Implant restoration is a safe and effective treatment for tooth loss.

Are dental implants a good option for you?

For more specifics about dental implants, call Dr. Richard Kernagis at 813-519-0128. The comfortable team at Your Time Dental Urgent Care provides world-class dental treatment for patients in Gibsonton and the surrounding areas.
