A Facelift For Your Teeth?

porcelain veneers price Tampa

Today’s post focuses on an effective and versatile cosmetic dental procedure—porcelain veneers.

Veneers are individual covers for the front part of teeth. They are a terrific way to correct a myriad of tooth imperfections such as chips, stains, yellowing, unattractive shape or minimal misalignment.

Have you ever yearned a minimally-invasive facelift for a tooth without getting an entire crown? Veneers are your answer! Strong, tooth-colored porcelain laminate is shaped into thin shells and custom-fitted for each patient’s unique set of teeth.

How many veneers should you get? This depends on how many teeth you want to enhance and the overall condition of your teeth. Dr. Kernagis will counsel you on the most successful strategy.

The thickness, enamel color, alignment, and shape of your teeth impact the result as well as whether you have any gum recession. Veneers are matched to your existing teeth so they will blend seamlessly, but if you are planning to treat several teeth, you definitely want to have them fabricated in the same “batch” at the lab.

The first step in the veneer process is to make a model of your teeth to work from. After that, a dental technician will use the model to engineer the veneers to the exact size, shape, color, and degree of translucency. Experienced cosmetic dentists and dental technicians elevate the level of artistry in this It is an involved process.

Many patients wonder if veneers are as durable as their natural teeth. Though the veneer tooth-prep process weakens the tooth slightly, with proper care, veneers can last up to 15 years. Dr. Kernagis will advise you in detail on the proper care of porcelain veneers.

Porcelain veneers are more durable than dental bonding, which is sometimes used to fix the same kinds of imperfections. Dental bonding generally has a shorter life span than veneers, so keep this in mind when comparing the relative prices of the two procedures.

If you are looking for a dentist with an artistic eye for stunning porcelain veneers, give Your Time Dental Urgent Care a call. My name is Dr. Richard Kernagis and I have been serving Gibsonton, Florida since 2001.

3 Vital Reasons to Floss Regularly

reasons to floss your teeth

Are you an avid flosser? Many of us from time to time skip this necessary habit. Studies show that around 68% of men and women report flossing at least once a week while 20% say they really never floss. Skipping the regular flossing routine can have devastating consequences on your overall dental health and bring about costly dental work in the future. Find out more about 3 major ways flossing helps protect us from gingivitis, decay and enhances our social lives.

1. Helps Fight Cavities

Every time we eat, small remnants of food are left behind. It’s common for these tiny bits of food to accumulate in between our teeth without us always being aware. When we floss, it gets rid of all these bits of food and helps reduce the amount of plaque buildup on our teeth.

If we’re not flossing routinely, more and more plaque will form and put us at risk of developing decay. When plaque begins to cover our teeth, the enamel is slowly worn down and can result in a tiny hole which we call a cavity. The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends flossing at least once per day to prevent this accumulation of plaque.

2. Prevents Gum Disease

Gum disease is a serious dental issue and can leave you with fewer teeth if not properly taken care of in a timely manner. There are four stages to gum disease and the first signs usually show up as blood in your gums after flossing or brushing. Anytime we’re flossing and notice this, we can take it as a sign we’re not flossing well enough. The bleeding in our gums creates an accumulation of plaque and tartar along the gumline.

Flossing is a great way to get rid of this plaque from our teeth. With a piece of floss, we can reach areas a toothbrush can’t reach. If we avoid flossing for long bouts, more and more tartar can build up and become harder to remove, so our gums bleed. Plaque and tartar allow certain bacteria to build up and seep in between our gums, damaging our teeth in the process.

3. Freshens Your Breath

Have you ever wondered why your breath is stale at times? This could be due to a lack of flossing, even if you brush routinely. When you brush your teeth, you get rid of small amounts of saliva, food, and a variety of fluids from your teeth. If you don’t brush routinely, everything sticks to your teeth and results in foul-smelling breath. The same thing can happen when we start minimizing the amount of time we spend flossing. Since the food is collecting at a slower rate, we may not notice our breath turning sour. Eventually, this will lead to covering our mouths during the conversation.

Conclusion

Even if flossing is the most challenging part of your oral health regimen, refusing to floss is not worth the risk. Removing the bacteria in between your teeth frequently is crucial to your dental health and will keep your breath smelling fresh.

Flossing and brushing are the best preventative measures to avoid gum disease. Remember to have twice-yearly professional dental cleanings as well. If you’re not currently flossing, it’s best to start sooner rather than later. Unexpected cavities can be expensive to treat and damaging to your health.

Cosmetic Dentistry vs. General Dentistry

Gibsonton Cosmetic DentistryToday’s article describes how general dentistry and cosmetic dentistry are different.

General dentists are dedicated to preventing and treating oral diseases such as cavities and gum disease. When a problem is diagnosed, let’s say, a cavity between two teeth, a general dentist will identify the best way to restore the tooth involved.

Cosmetic dentists perform elective dental procedures that make a smile more attractive. Cosmetic dentistry procedures available at Your Time Dental Urgent Care include teeth whitening, tooth-colored fillings, dental bonding, veneers, inlays, onlays, and dental crowns.

Some dentists, like myself, serve you with both general and cosmetic dentistry services. In some cases, there is a cosmetic component to restorative procedures. For example, if a dental patient comes in after receiving an injury that chipped a front tooth, the tooth needs to be restored to prevent decay. The tooth is also less structurally sound, so it is vulnerable to further damage. In addition, the tooth affects the overall appearance of the smile. Depending on the specifics of the damage, there are several restorative options. Dental bonding, porcelain veneers, and crowns are all used to repair a damaged tooth.

As you can see, there is not always a definitive line between general and cosmetic dentistry. At Your Time Dental Urgent Care, my comfortable team provides a full spectrum of preventative, restorative, and cosmetic dental procedures.

We treat area patients of all ages: from toddlers just beginning to get their baby teeth to mature patients who remember the days when many men and women were afraid of dentists and their whiny drills. (Some of our wonderful elderly patients might have crowns that are older than our hygienists.)

Experienced dental professionals who perform pediatric, general, orthodontic, and cosmetic dental procedures can meet all of your family’s dental needs.

If you are looking for a full-service dental practice in the Tampa area, I invite you visit Your Time Dental Urgent Care in Gibsonton. To schedule an oral examination or cosmetic dental smile makeover consultation, call 813-519-0128.

9 Tips For Preventing Gum Disease

prevent gum disease Gibsonton

Unfortunately, gingivitis (gum disease) is very common. But completely preventable.

Here’s some simple ways to keep your teeth and gums healthy:

If you keep your teeth and gums healthy, you will only need to visit the dentist for cleanings and checkups. Not major treatment.

1. Brush properly

Brush for two to three minutes, at least twice a day, with fluoridated toothpaste. Be sure to brush along the gumline. Scrub away the fragments of food Don’t brush too hard, but be thorough. Scrubbing your gums aggressively can be painful and is a BIG don’t.

2. Floss daily

Flossing removes plaque from places your toothbrush can’t reach. Don’t like to floss? Try a floss holder, which makes it far less complicated to insert the floss between teeth. But get over your aversion to flossing, unless you want tooth decay or gum disease.

3. Use a mouth rinse

Although not a substitute for brushing and flossing, using a mouth rinse can halt plaque accumulation and keep your enamel strong. Remember that fluoride mouth rinses are not the same as mouthwashes. Mouthwashes have alcohol and are designed to freshen your breath. (But they can worsen dry mouth which can cause other problems.)

4. Eat a healthy diet

Starchy and sugary foods increase plaque. A wholesome diet provides the nutrients needed (Vitamins A and C, in particular) to keep teeth and gums healthy.

5. Skip cigarettes and smokeless tobacco

Both of these habits may result in periodontitis (advanced gum disease) or oral cancer. While you’re at it, avoid E-cigs and vapors.

6. Check your meds

Be aware that certain medications can also threaten a healthy mouth. These include oral contraceptives, antidepressants and heart medicines. If your medications are affecting your dental health, meet with Dr. Kernagis.

7. Make preventative care a priority

Exercise preventive care and schedule regular evaluations — the ideal way to detect early signs of gum disease and make a plan to reverse it.

8. Talk to your dentist

Talk to your dentist about dental issues such as old, broken fillings or crowded teeth.

9. Protect your teeth

If you grind your teeth, talk with Dr. Kernagis about ways to protect your smile. If you participate in contact sports, use a custom mouthguard.

Listed above are nine simple ways to ensure your teeth don’t decay, or worse, fall out completely. It’s vital to brush your teeth in the morning and at night. Bonus points for brushing and/or rinsing after lunch. Daily dental hygiene also keeps your breath fresh. Your friends, family, and co-workers will appreciate that!

We Understand Dental Anxiety

sedation dentistry Gibsonton

Dental professionals in the Gibsonton area (including the team at Your Time Dental Urgent Care) are dedicated to oral health. Unfortunately, some men and women rarely go to the dentist. Others have the misconception that you only need to go to the dentist when you have a toothache.

In addition, there are those who have severe dental anxiety. Perhaps you fall into this category.

Dental anxiety is real, we get it.

If you are uneasy about dental visits, here are a few recommendations that may help ease you into consistent dental checkups. Certainly, enriched oral health will elevate your quality of life.

Choose a dentist you can trust.

I understand how challenging it can be to seek dental treatment. That’s why I make sure my patients are relaxed before I examine their teeth. First, I ask you many questions. I want to get to know you and help you get to know me. Communication builds a connection. A connection leads to a trusting relationship.

The more I know about you, the easier I can help you.

Be prepared to provide me with vital information about your lifestyle and health. Many men and women are intimidated at a dentist office. Because of this, they may hesitate to disclose sensitive issues.

We are here to help, regardless of your history or oral condition.

There is nothing in your past that we haven’t dealt with. Neglecting oral health. Drug use. Eating disorders. Regardless of your history, we have helped patients with similar problems.

In order to help you, I need complete accurate details. Bring notes if you are worried that you will forget something.

Also, during treatment, tell what you are experiencing so I can help you feel more relaxed. If we discover that you are going to need a dental procedure more extensive than filling a cavity, let’s discuss sleep dentistry.

Oral sedation is safe and effective.

The most important thing to know is that oral conscious sedation or sleep dentistry is perfectly safe. At Your Time Dental Urgent Care, we have been providing sedation since 2001. We offer different levels of sedation and a choice of medication including oral analgesics, nitrous oxide, and IV sedation.

At Your Time Dental Urgent Care, our comfortable staff will work to make your visit as pleasant as possible.

Beating Horrible Halitosis

Gibsonton lowest price teeth bleaching

“My neighbor’s bad breath is scaring me.”

I’m Dr. Kernagis with Your Time Dental Urgent Care. I’d like to take a few minutes to share with you some insight about halitosis.

Brushing just the teeth may not remove bits of food between the teeth and up in the gums. Bacteria can grow and stink from hidden floss-only locations. Gently brushing the gums, sides of the mouth, and the tongue in addition to the teeth may make the difference.

Also, the food you are eating can influence the odor in your mouth. Onions, garlic, and coffee are likely to show up on the breath no matter how much time is logged brushing.

Illness, infection, and allergies can all cause a lack of saliva which in turn upset the control of bacteria in the mouth. Diabetes, kidney failure, radiation therapy, liver malfunction, dry mouth, or even a runny nose can cause an odor. The microbe balance in the mouth is ever-changing.

Finally, dentures or removable appliances may also carry bacteria that need to be cleaned and freshened up on a regular basis.

1. Brush and floss the teeth as well as brush the tongue, gums, and sides of the mouth.
2. Enjoy onions and garlic a little less.
3. Stay on top of health issues.
4. Keep dentures clean.

Again, I’m Dr. Richard Kernagis. Located at 13145 Kings Lake Drive Ste 105B Gibsonton, Florida. We offer root canals, tooth extractions, weekend dental care, dental implants, and sedation dentistry just to name a few of our services.
