Wisdom teeth can damage adjacent teeth and nerves. Their awkward positioning can increase the risk of cavities and gum disease.

Additionally, they often come in crooked, crowding the other teeth and affecting the bite.

Wisdom teeth are also difficult to clean, especially if they do not fully erupt, which is a common problem for many people. This can cause an infection, as bacteria can be trapped under the skin where brushing and flossing is difficult.

Because we are an urgent care dental practice, we are skilled at tooth extractions. This includes wisdom teeth.

What should you expect after wisdom teeth extraction?

Your Time Dental Urgent Care recommends wisdom teeth extraction patients carefully follow the instructions given.

Bleeding is inevitable and should be expected to last up to three days. Rinsing is counter-productive, but firm pressure should be applied by biting down on the gauze pads to help stop the bleeding.

Swelling following wisdom teeth extraction is a sign that the healing process is progressing normally. Swelling that recedes and then re-appears after a few weeks, however, is a sign of infection. If this happens, it is essential that you communicate with us ASAP.

We recommend an examination seven to ten days after the extraction to make sure the wounds are clean and there are no complications. An antibiotic wash can be applied if the infection is present.

What are dry sockets?

Dry sockets can develop after wisdom teeth or other adult teeth are taken out. When a dry socket occurs, underlying bones and nerves are exposed in place of where a blood clot should form. Dry sockets can be exceptionally painful and delay healing.

How to avoid dry sockets:

Follow your dentist’s directions following the extraction procedure

• Keep your mouth clean with gentle saltwater rinse every few hours (your dentist may also prescribe an antibacterial rinse)
• Don’t use a straw until the extraction site has healed
• Avoid hard foods
• Brush teeth gently and avoid the extraction site
• Drink plenty of liquids
• Avoid strenuous activities
• Treat swelling by holding an ice pack to your cheek
• Avoid smoking and drinking alcohol

Gently flushing out your empty sockets after getting your wisdom teeth removed is a smart move for a couple of weeks after the procedure. Your dentist may recommend that you use a syringe to cautiously flush out your sockets. However, if you do develop dry sockets, it is even vital to sanitarily flush out the sockets regularly.

How to treat dry sockets:

• Flush out the affected area
• Stop smoking or drinking if necessary
• Follow your dentist’s guidelines

When to go to a dentist or Gibsonton urgent care dental clinic:

Tooth pain should be manageable through the use of pain relievers, however, if pain relievers do not work then it is probably time to see a dentist. At Your Time Dental Urgent Care, we treat all patients with dental pain, regardless of the cause.

Note: Some studies show a link between dry socket and oral contraceptives. Ask your dentist if you’re at risk. Other medications may prevent a proper blood clot from forming.

Let’s get right to it; while tongue, cheek, and lip piercings are “so in” right now, here’s five reasons to keep piercings where they belong—in your ears:

1. Excessive drooling—YIKES!
2. Chipped teeth
3. Infection (some even in places you wouldn’t think can get infected)
4. Hypersensitivity to metal
5. Nerve damage

Drooling

Lip and tongue piercings may make you look cool and edgy. They may express your personality and creativity. But they can cause frequent drooling. That may not be the look you’re going for.

Broken Teeth

Another important reason to keep piercings away from your mouth, lips, and tongue, is because having any metal in your mouth can chip your teeth. This can happen while eating, drinking, or sleeping. Or even while playing with said piercing.

Do you already have a tooth that’s damaged? Take care of these cracks before the whole tooth is in danger.

Small chips in a tooth can be filled, or crowned. But often patients with piercings come in with more serious issues. These may require a root canal or tooth extraction.

Infection

Beware of infection. When it comes to oral piercings, you have to really watch the pierced area. Your mouth is a bacterial zoo, so to speak. Upon piercing anything in your mouth, the bacteria can enter your bloodstream. Neglecting appropriate brushing habits can lead to infection. As well as touching the piercing with dirty hands.

Hypersensitivity or Allergic Reaction to Metal

Many people love body jewelry. But too much of a good thing (like metal) can be bad. Having metal piercings can lead to hypersensitivity to any metal in your mouth, such as silverware. This is problematic for most individuals. (Stock up on plastic utensils!)

There is also the risk of an allergic reaction at the piercing site. If you know of sensitivity to certain metals, you can get your piercing in a metal you aren’t allergic to. But you are still in jeopardy of the other hazards discussed here.

Nerve Damage

Finally, there’s the risk of permanent nerve damage. If the previous dangers don’t convince you, this one should. Experiencing a numb tongue is usually temporary. But in extreme cases, like if you can’t stop playing with the piercing, it can become permanent.
